Wall Ball World – Website/Organization Connects Handball Community

Playing handball is a rite of passage for many kids growing up in the city. The sport helps children, teens, and young adults stay fit and out of trouble. The most popular form of handball only requires a ball and a wall and helps create a community of athletes with a passion for the game.

One person who shares this passion for American handball is Jasmine Ray. She has spent three years developing a website and organization called Wall Ball World. Wall Ball World’s mission is, “To Establish the Sport of Wall Ball as a Vehicle for Inspiring and Empowering Peoples’ Lives.” Last December, CNN en Español profiled Jasmine and Wall Ball World.

Wall Ball World aims to be the hub of all wallball/handball sites across the globe. It also hopes to make a huge difference in the lives of many young people in urban areas.

“There are a lot of handball associations out there,” Jasmine Ray said. “But we cater more to a younger, urban/minority population.”

Jasmine also noted the entrance fees to tournaments sponsored by other organizations make the game out of reach for a lot of people. She wants to keep Wall Ball World tournament fees affordable at about half of what other associations charge. Wall Ball World has also awarded more prize money than other organizations thanks to Jasmine’s fierce pursuit of sponsors.

Jasmine, who was born in Brooklyn, has dedicated Wall Ball World to the memory of her brother Jonathan Robert Ray. The two grew up playing handball together and against local kids.

“When he passed away,” Jasmine recalled “the best way to honor his memory was with a handball tournament.”

Wall Ball World is a 501(c)3 organization that works to bring city-wide intramural handball tournaments to CUNY schools and has worked with Redbull to promote the sport.

Handball helps keep young people healthy by keeping them away from the coach and video games. Jasmine promotes the sport as a way to get people moving.

“I’m going to motivate my people to exercise and I’m going to do it with handball,” Jasmine said.

Wall Ball World is always looking for corporate sponsors who want to help create positive changes in communities of color and accepts donations from private citizens who share Jasmine’s dream.

“I see Wall Ball World becoming international and providing my community an opportunity to see the world through playing their favorite sport,” said Jasmine.

You can help Jasmine make a difference in the community she serves by making a donation and sharing this post with anyone you know who would love to support Wall Ball World.

On Friday, March 8, at the SXSW 2013 in Austin, TX., a panel discussion will bring together several experts from all areas to explore the impact of the Hispanic voice on technology. During the presentation entitled “Latinos y Mobile: A Silver Bullet?” the community of new media leaders will also release the results from the second annual Latino Voice survey.

South by Southwest (SXSW) is a set of film, interactive, and music festivals and conferences that have taken place every spring (usually in March) since 1987 in Austin, Texas. The Latinos y Mobile panelists bring experience in politics, caused based organization, commercial campaigns and mobile in order to uncover trends in issue identification and activation around the Latino community.

In order to provide the most accurate and up-to-date Hispanic perspective, panelists are seeking nationwide Latino feedback. So take a moment to submit your answers to the Latino Voice survey now.

Feel free to also forward along this info to other Latinos to ensure the survey results are a huge hit at this year’s SXSW.

Does your business/organization have a Google+ Page?

Everyone knows how popular Facebook Pages are for businesses and organizations, but has your group created a Google+ Page yet? If it has not, it should. It’s just another online promotional vehicle connected to the most popular search engine in the world. Google launched its new Google+ Business Pages on November 7. The new Pages feature allows brands, products, companies, businesses, and organizations to build their very own tailored Google+ presence. Of course if you are not familiar with Google+ for individuals it might be challenging to jump into Business Pages.

The launch of Google+ Pages increased overall traffic to Google+. Experian HitWise noted that for the week ending Nov. 12, Google+ logged 6.8 million visits from U.S. users alone, making it the third-biggest week for U.S. visits since the network launched June 28. So far, 61 percent of the world’s top 100 brands have created Google+ Pages since its inception, according to SEO company BrightEdge.

Facebook has a few years on Google+ but it’s still early. Google+ Pages may one day be just as popular as Facebook Pages. We’ll have to wait and see. Ford, for example, has 27,648 fans on Google+ as of this posting, but 5 million total fans on Facebook. If a company like Ford is diving into the Google+ Page craze, what not your company/organization?

So what does your organization or business have to lose? If you want to create a Goolge+ Page check out Google’s guide to using Google+ Pages.

Velez Communication on Facebook

I’ve been on Facebook since about 2006/2007 and just Sunday decided to finally create a page to highlight my writing, blogging, and consulting work. The page mainly supplements my business blog at Velez Communication, but I also aim to showcase posts from this blog and Fraternity Communication, and writing from Examiner.com and ElBoricua.com. If you like any of my work please feel free to “Like” Velez Communication on Facebook.

I created a logo to go along with my new Facebook page. In my search for a logo online I came across the symbol of the mythical Phoenix, the firebird that resurrects itself from its ashes. There was something about the fictional creature that spoke to me, both personally and professionally.

So please support my overall work by liking Velez Communication on Facebook.

Thanks for your continued readership.
