I’ve been on Facebook since about 2006/2007 and just Sunday decided to finally create a page to highlight my writing, blogging, and consulting work. The page mainly supplements my business blog at Velez Communication, but I also aim to showcase posts from this blog and Fraternity Communication, and writing from Examiner.com and ElBoricua.com. If you like any of my work please feel free to “Like” Velez Communication on Facebook.
I created a logo to go along with my new Facebook page. In my search for a logo online I came across the symbol of the mythical Phoenix, the firebird that resurrects itself from its ashes. There was something about the fictional creature that spoke to me, both personally and professionally.
So please support my overall work by liking Velez Communication on Facebook.
About a month or so I received an invite to join Spotify, an on demand online music streaming service. I was already happy with the two music services I use now, Pandora and Last.fm, so I passed on the invitation. Recently Spotify teamed up with Facebook to offer its 800 million members a great way to listen to music online and share tunes with their Facebook friends, so I thought I’d give Spotify a try. I’m glad I did.
You have to download and install the Spotify program to your computer, so for some who hate downloading stuff this might be a deal breaker. A few months ago you could join the service on its own, but now a Facebook account is required. I recommend checking it out. Your Facebook friends on Spotify can decide to share their playlist and favorite artists with you or keep this info private, which just recently became an option. I like listening to music when I want and it also allows me to listen to new full-length music anytime I want. If I really enjoy the song I can buy it on iTunes. So far, I’m loving Spotify.
Did I mention the service is free? Spotify provides you with 10 hours of free music a month. There are short commercials along the way, but they’re not very annoying. If you really love the service you can opt for a premium service with unlimited music and no commercials. For now the free service works for me.
Spotify has an incredible music library, but of course not all songs/artists are available. For example, I love Seal and was happy to see that most of his music is just a click away. However another one of my favorite singers, Adele, only has her first album and her mega hit “Rolling in the Deep” from her second album, 21, available for streaming on Spotify.
Music has been social online for some time now, however this joint venture by Facebook and Spotify may take online music sharing to the next level. So if you have a Facebook account and enjoy listening to your favorite music online and finding new music your friends already like, give Spotify a try.
If you already use Spotify feel free to share your thoughts on it so far. Enjoy the music!
I have begun working with a group that aims to market mainstream Hollywood movies to the greater U.S. Hispanic/Latino market. The promotional work sounds pretty interesting and I look forward to learning more about, and sharing information on, upcoming films.
The first film I’ll be promoting for HMThinkLatino is entitled “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” an action-comedy based on the graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley. Several trailers for the movie showcase great visuals and a cool and funny cast in their late-teens/early twenties. Overall it looks like an entertaining movie full of lots of fun.
“The emotions and interactions throughout the film are infused with the mass media that this generation has grown up with—not just in music, film and animation, but in over 30 years of video games,” said Bryan Lee O’Malley.
The movie, which opens Aug. 13, 2010, also seems to have a superhero-like tone with a twist of sci-fi fantasy, making it appealing to a broad set of audiences.
Director, producer, and screen writer Edgar Wright has worked on the projects like the U.K. series-turned-international-cult-phenomenon Spaced, Shaun of the Dead, and action-comedy opus Hot Fuzz. In his mid-thirties, Wright has evolved from a young film geek wanting to prove himself to one of the most sought-after geeks working in film today.
A recent report by comScore, an internet marketing research company, found that mobile access to social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter saw a triple digit increase in utilization since January 2009.
According to the new research, some 25.1 million people accessed Facebook via a mobile Web browser, a growth of 112 percent from January 2009. Twitter use via a mobile browser grew 347 percent to 4.7 million users. MySpace saw an increase of 11.4 million users.
In total, some 30.8 percent of smartphone users accessed Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking sites via their mobile browser in January 2010. That number is an 8.3 point jump from the 22.5 percent figure comScore tallied one year ago.
“Social networking remains one of the most popular and fastest-growing behaviors on both the PC-based Internet and the mobile Web,” said Mark Donovan, comScore senior vice president of mobile, in the company’s press release.
Another research company, research2gudiance, estimates the fast-growing number of smartphone users will increase from about 100 million last year to nearly 1 billion by 2013.
In 2009 I finally upgraded to a smartphone and find myself accessing Twitter and Facebook regularly, especially when out and about. Do you have a smartphone yet? If so, how often do you use your phone to access social networking sites?
As the Latino population continues to grow, so does its online presence. A recent study shows that half of US Hispanics/Latinos have an online social media profile. Other studies show the impact Latinos are having in social media and our influence is being noticed by corporate America.
A group of Latino leaders in social media have created a movement online to get more Latinos connected with each other. Latinos in Social Media (LatISM) believes the best way to reach Latinos is through Latinos. LatISM has scheduled conferences in New York, Texas, and Florida during Hispanic Heritage Month. The conferences will bring bloggers, Twitters, Facebook, MySpace, Hi5, LinkedIn leaders and many more together to learn about the latest social media trends.
